Infrastructure & Intelligence

For a robust Project & Portfolio Management (PPM) function and solution the architecture of the PPM landscape and the expected information drivers coming from PPM are key for success.

Once a decision has been made to invest in PPM and point solutions need to be eliminated, there is often insufficient attention for infrastructure and intelligence. But what happens if the end users are complaining about performance of the new solution in place and managers are not happy with the outline of the reports and dashboards? This certainly will impact the acceptation of your PPM implementation!

From a technology perspective a PPM solution needs to fit into the current IT architecture and future landscape. The proposed solution needs to be verified against the current technical infrastructure and business applications in place for e.g. Finance and HR (information exchange). For informed decisions the corporate (business) intelligence capabilities need to be aligned with the proposed solution as well.

Regarding the business decisions for Infrastructure and Intelligence two essential discussions need to be verified upfront. First of all its is important to discuss which data will be stored in what application (PPM or e.g. ERP) and who will be the intellectual owner of the source. Secondly PPM data needs to be transferred ultimately into "Information" for better decision making. So, what are the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) on the PPM reports and what other information needs to be displayed on the reports and dashboards. Define your output upfront to avoid  implementations discussions and rework in the future.
